We have been revising word classes. Here is a guide to the different types of word:
Nouns
Nouns are naming words. They name people, places, things or ideas. There are different types:
Common nouns - general names for people, places or things e.g. dog, cat, boy, house.
Proper nouns - specific names for people, places or things e.g. London, Mrs Dixon, St Andrew's Primary School. Proper nouns start with a capital letter.
Abstract nouns - names something you cannot see, hear, taste, smell or touch. They are ideas, qualities or feelings rather than objects e.g. happiness, love, hatred, peace, freedom, justice, bravery.
Collective nouns - names for groups of people, animals or things e.g. team, class, flock, herd, pack, bunch, pile.
Verbs
Verbs are 'doing', 'being' or 'having' words.
Action verbs show what someone or something does e.g. run, jump, walk, eat.
Being verbs tell us what something 'is' or 'was' e.g. is, are, was, were, am, be, being
Having verbs show possession e.g. have, has, had
Prepositions
Prepositions show the relationship between the noun (or pronoun) and another word in the sentence e.g. in, on, under, between, next to, with, to, before, after
Adjectives
Adjectives are describing words. They describe nouns or pronouns e.g. horrible, scarlet, tiny, elusive
