PSHE and Wellbeing
At St Andrew’s, we believe that every child has the right to develop healthy self-esteem, resilience and a strong belief in themselves. Our PSHE, Wellbeing and RSE curriculum supports children to understand their emotions, build positive relationships and develop the knowledge and skills they need to thrive both now and in the future.
We recognise that children’s personal, social and emotional wellbeing underpins successful learning and positive life outcomes. Through a nurturing ethos rooted in our Christian values, we aim to equip pupils with the confidence, empathy and awareness needed to become responsible citizens within their school, community and wider society.
Our PSHE and wellbeing curriculum meets the statutory requirements for Relationships Education and Health Education set out by the Department for Education.
HeartSmart

We follow the HeartSmart programme, which places emotional health and character development at the centre of learning. HeartSmart helps children understand how their thoughts, feelings and choices affect their behaviour and relationships.
The programme is based on five key principles:
- Get HeartSmart – understanding emotions and how the brain works
- Don’t Forget to Let Love In – building self-worth and positive identity
- Too Much Selfie Isn’t Healthy – developing healthy relationships and empathy
- Don’t Rub It In, Rub It Out – forgiveness, managing conflict and resilience
- No Way Through Isn’t True – perseverance, hope and problem solving
These principles are embedded throughout school life, collective worship and daily interactions, helping children to develop lifelong emotional wellbeing skills.

What Wellbeing Looks Like in Our School
We promote wellbeing through:
- Dedicated PSHE lessons
- Circle time and discussion opportunities
- Calming and reflection areas within classrooms, where children can regulate emotions and take time to reset when needed
- Pupil voice opportunities
- Pastoral support and nurturing relationships
- The St Andrew’s Way supports positive behaviour and reflects our school values
- A safe, inclusive learning environment
We provide additional wellbeing support through targeted programmes and partnerships. Confidence Chris works with children to develop confidence, self-esteem and resilience, helping them to recognise their strengths and manage challenges positively.
Anti-bullying Workshop
Children have also taken part in a one-day creative learning experience focused on anti-bullying, helping them to understand the importance of respect, inclusion and positive relationships.
Active Hope
We enrich our PSHE and wellbeing provision through partnership work with organisations such as Active Hope, a Christian charity that provides outdoor and adventurous experiences for children and young people. Through these opportunities, pupils are encouraged to take part in new challenges, develop confidence and resilience, and build important life skills such as teamwork, perseverance and problem solving. Active Hope also supports our school’s Christian ethos by leading collective worship sessions that promote reflection, faith and personal growth. These experiences contribute to pupils’ personal development, emotional wellbeing and sense of achievement.
