Reception

Welcome to Reception!

At St Andrew’s, our Reception Class marks the beginning of an exciting learning journey, where every child is encouraged to achieve, believe and care, together. We provide a warm, welcoming and stimulating environment where children grow in confidence, develop their curiosity and discover a love of learning.

Through a balance of play-based learning and structured activities, our dedicated staff support each child’s social, emotional and academic development. We encourage every child to believe in themselves, achieve their full potential and care for themselves, others and the world around them.

We look forward to working in partnership with you to make your child’s first steps into school a happy and memorable experience, filled with joy, discovery and success!

Important Information

School Bags

Please ensure your child brings a bag to school every day. Check it regularly, as we will use it to send home letters, books and other important information.

Snacks and Drinks

Fresh water, milk and fruit are available to all children every day. Parents also have the option to pay for their child to enjoy warm toast or a crumpet. Alternatively, children may bring a healthy snack from home, such as vegetable sticks or bread.

P.E.
P.E. takes place every Tuesday. Children should come to school wearing their P.E. kit on this day.

Reading Books

Reading books are sent home every Friday and should be returned to school the following Thursday. We ask that children read at home at least three times each week. Re-reading the same book helps children build confidence, develop fluency and improve their understanding. Regular reading at home makes a huge difference to your child’s progress.

Coats and Wellies

Learning outdoors is an important part of our Reception curriculum and takes place in all weathers, provided it is safe to do so. Please ensure your child brings a coat to school every day.

We also ask that a pair of wellington boots is kept in school. These will be used for exploring our outdoor garden and taking part in our exciting Forest Fun Fridays activities

Our Autumn Term in Reception 🍂

Our main priority this term is to help children settle into school, establish routines and build positive relationships with adults and their peers, ensuring everyone feels safe, happy and ready to learn.

Our theme is Getting to Know One Another. We will explore how we are all unique and special, learning about feelings, friendships, families and what makes us who we are. Through high-quality texts, including Amazing! by Steve Antony, The Friendship Bench by Wendy Meddour and What Happened to You? by James Catchpole, we will develop our understanding of kindness, inclusion and celebrating differences.

We will also explore Autumn and Harvest, noticing seasonal changes and discovering the natural world through stories, play and outdoor learning.
